What AzuraCast hosting means
AzuraCast is free, open-source web radio management software. It gives a station a browser-based panel for uploading media, building playlists, scheduling programs, managing DJs, and configuring streams. Because the software is free, the real question for most AzuraCast radio operators is not which software to use but who runs the server it lives on.
AzuraCast hosting answers that question. With self-hosting, you rent a server and run everything yourself. With managed AzuraCast hosting, the provider operates the server and you work in the panel.
Managed vs self-hosted AzuraCast
Self-hosting gives direct control to teams comfortable running a VPS: you choose the server, install and update the software, configure networking, plan backups, monitor services, and investigate failures yourself. That can be the right choice for a technically staffed organization with unusual infrastructure requirements.
Managed AzuraCast hosting is for broadcasters who want the station controls without owning the underlying operations. Radiocast handles the hosting environment, DDoS protection, backups, and monitoring. For a detailed side-by-side, see our self-hosted AzuraCast comparison.
| Task | Managed AzuraCast hosting | Self-hosted AzuraCast |
|---|---|---|
| Server rental and capacity | Included in the plan | You choose and pay for a VPS |
| Software install and updates | Handled by Radiocast | You install and upgrade |
| Backups and monitoring | Handled by Radiocast | You configure and check them |
| DDoS protection | Included | You arrange it separately |
| Media, playlists, and DJs | You manage them in the panel | You manage them in your own panel |
| When something breaks | Contact support | You troubleshoot the server |
What you still do in the panel
Managed does not mean hands-off programming. Your team still uploads music, jingles, and station IDs; builds rotations and calendar-scheduled playlists; sets crossfades; creates DJ accounts; and reviews listener analytics. Those are the editorial decisions that make the station sound like yours, and they stay with you.
DJs can go live from the browser with Web DJ or connect encoder software such as BUTT, Mixxx, or Virtual DJ over Icecast. When a DJ disconnects, AutoDJ resumes automatically. Learn more about automation in our AutoDJ hosting guide.
AzuraCast radio plans on Radiocast
Radiocast plans include AutoDJ, real-time analytics, geo-blocking and IP blocking, and 192 kbps AAC/MP3 streams on Professional ($5.99/mo), Small Business ($8.99/mo), and Radiocast Max ($19.99/mo). Listener caps run from 100 on Professional to 500 on Radiocast Max.
Enterprise includes a fully managed dedicated AzuraCast panel for high-capacity deployments, and Reseller includes fully managed AzuraCast hosting for organizations running stations for their own customers. Both are custom, higher-capacity plans quoted by the team. Confirm panel access and exact limits for your plan before purchasing. The broader online radio station hosting guide covers every plan.
Migrating an existing AzuraCast station
Moving from a self-hosted panel or another provider involves more than copying audio files. Inventory media, playlists, jingles, scheduled programs, DJ accounts, mount URLs, embeds, and any automation that depends on the old stream. Rebuild the most important playlists first and test them in parallel before changing the public links listeners use.
Keep the old service running until the new AutoDJ schedule, live DJ handoffs, and player embeds are confirmed, then switch links and announce the change. Contact support before you start to confirm what can be moved for your setup. If you are still deciding between server options, the Icecast vs Shoutcast guide and our page on free radio hosting cover the alternatives.
